End of NMCI? More Sailor Training?

Posted by – June 28, 2008

Well the Navy will be closing the contract it has held with the Navy and Marine Corps Intranet in 2010. Though the contract is not renewable, the Navy is looking more into bringing back the IT field to the Navy. For those who don’t know, NMCI is completely outsourcing of everything IT i.e. non-DoN civilian contractors. The Department of the Navy CIO Robert Carey views NMCI as “forcing function within the DON to attend to our legacy infrastructure of applications, servers and networks.” Unfortunately, the rest of the Navy has opposing views.

The next move for the Navy is to begin its Next Generation Enterprise Network “NGEN” and have it up and running before the contract expires. The Navy hopes to buy all of the equipment that NMCI purchased in order to keep things running smoothly instead of buying everything over again. What I can benefit most from this is the fact that more jobs could open up as far as shore duty goes. More…

Work Hobby

Posted by – June 22, 2008

Can you believe that more work can be done out of a workspace than in? I have a copy of Microsoft 2003 Server Standard that my Dad was able to obtain, legally of course. Also with the age of technology we live in, I am able to run a server from my laptop, without having to remove the original operating system. Nerdy? Without a doubt.

I guess what I want to do as a hobby is to be able to run my own server, not to host anyone but myself, but to see if I can manage one. Though I am someone good when it comes to networking, I am a novice in the civilian sector. There certainly is a lot I could learn as far as networking goes, but I want to be able to do things on my own without having to consult someone ever ten seconds. Obviously I won’t hold myself to that, and will ask questions along the way, but with time I want to be able to secure a job in the IT field when I leave the Navy.

Conflict…

So there is a pissing contest going on between the department heads. From one of my previous posts, I explained that one of our servers went down because of an overheated toggle switch and put the the whole server rack out of commission. Well earlier this week we got the part in and needs to be put in so that the toggle switch from the rack we took temporarily can have one again and take down the ghetto ass rigged UPS.

I figured this was going to be a two second deal, take the new toggle and put it in the rack that does not have a toggle switch already there. Obviously the quickest and painless way to go about this, but at the department head level, well they want it done a different way. Take the temporary toggle out of the server that had the busted one, and put it back in its original rack and put the new toggle where the busted one was. Definitely the most time consuming process, but from what was explained to me was that by doing this, it would determine if the toggle went bad, or something else inside the rack and finding out the true source of the issue. Thoughts

Well I am back in Japan after a 2 week underway with no visit to Korea as planned. Instead we went around in circles near the Mariana Islands, more importantly Guam, and commanded the skies for Kitty Hawk. Once again our ship is shafted into the Air Defense Commander position and thanked by taking away a port. Pusan isn’t the greatest port in the world, but does beat circling the Pacific with nothing to amount to except the fact that our ship has no problem canceling, or being told to cancel, a port visit cause the ship can’t take care of itself. Another pat on the back well earned.

Well tomorrow is Fathers Day and once again I am not home for it. My Dad and I are really close and it kills me that I can’t spend as much time with him as I did before I joined the Navy. What’s even worse is that being in Japan makes it even harder to stay in contact with him. I try and send emails as often as I can with something new, or even just a hello letting him know I’m alright. I mean, I joined the Navy to be an IT cause that is what he does and I’m my Father’s Son. He has been there for me my whole life, from camping to surfing, skating…just about everything I’ve accomplished, except for the Navy. He’s only been there for my boot camp graduation, and that is it as far as the Navy goes. If I was in San Diego, he would have been there for my advancements, my awards…so many things and he can’t because of the distance. He has his work to do and I have mine. More…

Tokyo Stabbing

Posted by – June 10, 2008

Reports came out not too long ago about a stabbing, but in my opinion a massacre, in the Akihabara district of Tokyo, Japan. The total of deaths from the incident is confirmed at seven with 10 wounded. It was reported that this man was suffering from depression and was “tired of life.”

From the article

TOKYO – A man plowed into shoppers with a truck Sunday and then stabbed 17 people within minutes, killing at least seven of them in a grisly attack that shocked a country known for its low crime rate.

The lunchtime violence in the Akihabara district, a popular electronics and video game area, sent thousands of people fleeing.

The assault, which occurred on the seventh anniversary of a mass stabbing at a Japanese elementary school, was the latest in a series of knife attacks that have stoked fears of rising violent crime in Japan. More…

UK National ID Scheme

Posted by – June 8, 2008

According to the BBC, the UK has a new ID card in the works. Though this isn’t new or recent, what is recent is as to what information is to be put on there as far as being able to identify a person. As far as the US goes, we have state drivers license and ID cards already. The difference between what we have and what the UK wants is putting privacy information such as fingerprints and to go as far as eye scans. This would be the “National Identity Scheme” and would be the official form of ID in the country.

From the article:

The committee said it accepted the government’s assurance that the scheme would not be used as a surveillance tool.

However, “we seek the further assurance that any initiative to broaden the scope of the scheme will only be proposed after consulting the information commissioner and on the basis that proposals will be subject to parliamentary scrutiny in draft form,” it said.

Committee chairman Keith Vaz said there could be “potentially disastrous consequences” if data was mishandled. More…

Joe

Posted by – June 5, 2008

I’ve gotten to the point in my Navy career where I undoubtedly want to get out. Obviously I have some time left in the service before I can, so I will have to keep an upbeat attitude while I am in. When I leave Japan I can to start a slow steady process of discharge, so when I do get out I have something to fall back on and not be homeless like some people I know.

Honestly, no matter how great of a command this is, the downside is how much something insignificant can be held on to for so long. Yes, when I first came aboard, I was Joe Navy. My uniform was always on point, I did everything with great enthusiasm and overall I was squared away like every other Joe Navy. I have been out here for two years, and in that time I have been shafted, screwed over, and treated like crap and yet through all of that I have kept a somewhat positive attitude. Unfortunately, no matter what I do, I can’t convince the guys I work with that I am not the same when I came aboard. More…

Technical Difficulties

Posted by – June 2, 2008

Well after a week of no internet availability, I finally have an opportunity to get a post up.

So we are out escorting the carrier USS Kitty Hawk with no port visit. The day we got underway it was pointed out that no one had internet and I was feeling like shit and wanted no part in finding out the problem. Apparently this issue wasn’t new due to an anchorage we did a few weeks prior but was resolved when we pulled back in. Since we are going to be out for a few weeks, internet was needed and our mail queue was getting filled on shore side with no destination. More…
