The Deckplates

So there is a pissing contest going on between the department heads. From one of my previous posts, I explained that one of our servers went down because of an overheated toggle switch and put the the whole server rack out of commission. Well earlier this week we got the part in and needs to be put in so that the toggle switch from the rack we took temporarily can have one again and take down the ghetto ass rigged UPS.

I figured this was going to be a two second deal, take the new toggle and put it in the rack that does not have a toggle switch already there. Obviously the quickest and painless way to go about this, but at the department head level, well they want it done a different way. Take the temporary toggle out of the server that had the busted one, and put it back in its original rack and put the new toggle where the busted one was. Definitely the most time consuming process, but from what was explained to me was that by doing this, it would determine if the toggle went bad, or something else inside the rack and finding out the true source of the issue.

Though both are reasonable in there respective ways, the issue is of who is installing this toggle. Preferably this should be done by someone with more electronic experience, which the Navy has a specific job for electronics, ET. I asked one of my ET buddies to help install it since he helped remove it the first time we did this. I assumed he would install it in the rack without the toggle and done with.

Now the toggle lies with the ET Department Head and he doesn’t want to give it back. We bought four of them, but none the less we bought them and my Chief wants it back. When I tried to ask him for it back, he didn’t like my response as to why I wanted it. What sucks is the conflicting authority, my Chief or the Officer. Because he is an Officer, I have no choice but to refrain from asking him again and report back to my Chief.

Not sure what will happen, because as much as I want this to be over with, it is now a Khaki issue and I don’t want to be in the middle. Let the games begin!
