Work Hobby

Can you believe that more work can be done out of a workspace than in? I have a copy of Microsoft 2003 Server Standard that my Dad was able to obtain, legally of course. Also with the age of technology we live in, I am able to run a server from my laptop, without having to remove the original operating system. Nerdy? Without a doubt.

I guess what I want to do as a hobby is to be able to run my own server, not to host anyone but myself, but to see if I can manage one. Though I am someone good when it comes to networking, I am a novice in the civilian sector. There certainly is a lot I could learn as far as networking goes, but I want to be able to do things on my own without having to consult someone ever ten seconds. Obviously I won’t hold myself to that, and will ask questions along the way, but with time I want to be able to secure a job in the IT field when I leave the Navy.

Believe it or not, computers isn’t the career I plan to do the rest of my life. In fact, I want to become a high school algebra teacher and coach at my high school I graduated from. This then begs the question of why I want to get into networking if it’s something I don’t plan to do as a permanent career. Well, when I leave the Navy, I am well aware that I won’t have a teaching degree, not yet anyways. I want to be able to leave the Navy with a strong ability in the IT field so when I am still in college I still have a job to pay for it. IT does pay quite a bit on the outside and will help me along the way, but I figure that if I have something to fall back on while in school, becoming a teacher wont be so much as a dream and eventually become realitly.

Just because I do one thing doesn’t mean I’ll be stuck with it for life. Sometimes life takes its detours and you have to go with what you know to get what you want. I know computers, and I hope that it helps me to land that teaching job I want.
